Sue Rogers is a retired preschool teacher in San Diego.

As an early childhood educator, I have worked in various settings with diverse groups of children, and observed how important effective preschool is in the lives of children and their families. Preschool is an introduction to the notion of “school” and “learning” in a more formal setting than the family. As such it builds the foundation upon which education will continue for the rest of the child’s life.

I believe that an effective preschool experience nurtures a child’s natural curiosity and drive to learn. If done right, each new scholastic experience, from kindergarten through post graduate studies, will be better based on the foundation provided by a good pre-kindergarten education. I believe that California should regard early childhood education as the most important investment we can make. Even if a child does not advance onto higher education, the initial foundation will still be present and strong.

Based on my experience, I consider an effective program one that employs well educated, experienced teachers, maintains an appropriate group size and ratio, procures appropriate materials, and provides a clean, safe, nurturing environment. Without key elements such as these, a child may not be encouraged to explore and grow in all areas of development.  We want to invest in our children’s future, and make sure effective pre-kindergarten is available to all who wish to participate.
