San Diego County law enforcement officials encourage support for early ed.

San Diego law enforcement officials were joined by U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter to release Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California’s new report. The report urges the county to increase spending on early learning programs now as a means of saving up to $160 million annually, as well as considerably decreasing long-term violent crime rates and correction costs. It also calls for a local and national shift to a more integrated preschool-through-graduation approach to education. more

California makes significant gains in annual report, but still fails 6 of 10 quality benchmarks.

While state preschool spending has decreased nationally by about $30 million, the National Institute for Early Education Research’s (NIEER) annual State of Preschool report shows that California has actually increased total pre-k program spending and gained considerable ground in state rankings over the past year. Despite this gain, California still meets only four of NIEER’s ten quality benchmarks. more

National Association of Elementary School Principals call for high-quality pre-k.

Actively searching for a means of closing the wide achievement gap seen in elementary schools across the nation, the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) released a report calling for increased attention to high-quality pre-k programs in order to cut the achievement gap by 20 percent, as well as improve school-appropriate behavior, cognitive abilities and test scores. more

In a recently released White House report, President Obama focuses on improving early childhood education to help empower the nation’s fastest growing demographic to succeed in school and beyond. The report states that the success of our country’s Latino community is necessary in order for the United States to remain globally competitive. more

New study shows benefits of preschool 25 years later. | 07.27.2011

A new longitudinal study shows that children who attended the Chicago Child-Parent Center Education Program had higher educational attainment, income, health insurance coverage and lower rates of justice-system involvement and more, up to 25 years later. more

New study shows early care and education industry strengthens entire California economy.

A new study conducted by The Center for Labor Research and Education examines how early child care and education boost state economy. The early care and education industry alone provides the state with 200,000 jobs and high tax revenue. Furthermore, access to high-quality early education programs benefit children, parents and future generations. more

SJ2020, the campaign launched by the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE), the City of San Jose and education, business and community leaders to close the San Jose achievement gap by the year 2020, recently highlighted TK as an important leg of early learning in the area. more

National Council of La Raza and First Book team up for free Spanish language book giveaway

In the next few months, thanks to Disney Children’s Publishing, First Book - a national nonprofit organization that provides access to high-quality, free and low-cost books for programs and schools who serve children in need - will be distributing more than 1 million free Spanish language books. more
