San Diego County law enforcement officials encourage support for early ed.

San Diego law enforcement officials were joined by U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter to release Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California’s new report. The report urges the county to increase spending on early learning programs now as a means of saving up to $160 million annually, as well as considerably decreasing long-term violent crime rates and correction costs. It also calls for a local and national shift to a more integrated preschool-through-graduation approach to education. The report projects significant short term savings from reduced special education and grade retention, resulting in high annual savings as well as an improved learning environment. Long term social and economic benefits are much higher; the report notes that in the fight against crime, “no weapons [are] more powerful than proven programs that keep kids from committing crimes in the first place.” Read the full report and watch a video clip of the event.
