California makes significant gains in annual report, but still fails 6 of 10 quality benchmarks.
While state preschool spending has decreased nationally by about $30 million, the National Institute for Early Education Research’s (NIEER) annual State of Preschool report shows that California has actually increased total pre-k program spending and gained considerable ground in state rankings over the past year. Despite this gain, California still meets only four of NIEER’s ten quality benchmarks. NIEER’s report recognizes the growth in size and efficiency that has taken place since California’s preschool program was consolidated and became more streamlined in 2008. As California works to increase program quality and meet more quality benchmarks, it is important that we do not lose the recent gains in access that have placed many of California’s children on the path to success.
