Bill Authors and Co-sponsors Celebrate New Preschool Laws

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, SB 1629 author Senator Darrell Steinberg, AB 2759 author Assemblymember Dave Jones and leading early education advocates celebrated the signing of preschool reform legislation at a Sacramento preschool. Read the Superintendent's press release.

Superintendent O'Connell: "The achievement gap occurs even before students enter kindergarten. These two bills really will help us address the achievement gap for these youngest learners. Quality preschool may really be the most effective way we can close the achievement gap."

Senator Steinberg: "We know we're living through difficult budget times. But there will be a time to invest in public education again, and to invest in what we know works. And when that time comes, the first priority will be preschool."

Assemblymember Jones: "Right now we have far too many kids, particularly at risk, low-income kids, who can’t find quality preschool. We need to do the right thing and make those investments. These two bills lay the groundwork for that."
